Seen this before on other projects. When there are already a _0 and _1 task already issued and with a deadline fast approaching, the scheduler preemptively issus a _2 task just in case neither of the two are expected to report in time. This occurs usually within an hour or two of the deadline.
When one of the first tasks reports and just squeeks in under the deadline, the _2 task is cancelled with a 0 credit assigned. This value then gets mistakenly applied to validated tasks.
Seen it often at Universe and now at Asteroids too. Looks like Gaia is susceptible also. It's a rare occurrence.

The 2nd, 3rd and 4th don't even have resends. The _2 and _3 were an error then canceled by server. At least click the links Keith.

At 31 Oct 2024, 19:26:14 UTC I returned 12 tasks, 11 for zero credit. 5 min earlier from another PC, 2 of 4 at 31 Oct 2024, 19:21:15 UTC. More like the validator is taking a dump at certain times.

I did click the first link. Can't comment on your issues since you choose to hide your hosts. It looks like all the 0 credit issues have to do with Gaia_4 tasks which were faulty and likely cancelled in bulk by the admins to make room for the Gaia_5 tasks.

No. I only have seen it on 5_Gaia tasks, with only 2 tasks sent out for the workunits.

Your description does not fit any of these tasks.

Mine were also all Gaia 5 and the only tasks being sent out during that time.
